A new solution for the refurbishment of variable-geometry turbocompressors

Historical flashback

Since the end of the 1990s, many automobiles, HGV, ship engines and industrial engines have been equipped with variable-geometry turbocompressors. The aim now is to reduce turnaround times to the minimum, but also to contribute to finding solutions for engine contamination problems.

Limitations of variable-geometry turbocompressors…

Variable-geometry turbocompressors offer many advantages, but they have their limits too. The multi-valve regulator is sensitive to carbon deposits which, in large quantities, can clog the valves. This is a common occurrence when the vehicle is driven on short journeys that do not allow the engine to reach its optimum operating temperature.

A problem with carburetion, the catalyst or the EGR valve can accelerate the degradation process in the variable-geometry turbocompressor.

As a rule, the regulator seizes-up either fully open, or closed, generating a boost pressure which is either too low or too high. If it is too high, there is a real danger of the turbocompressor being damaged. The engine management programme detects an anomaly, and restricts the engine power by switching to degraded mode to keep damage to a minimum while still allowing the vehicle to run or the machine to operate in the case of a static engine. The turbocompressor must therefore be refurbished to restore its performance.

Up to now, the only option was a full replacement of the turbocompressor. For some time now, Turbo Moteurs Migne has been able to offer cleaning and treatment with penetrating oil to loosen seized parts for first generation turbocompressors, thanks to their modern, high-performance equipment.

TMM goes one step further with its offer to fully refurbish your turbocompressor. We now have a test bench for the inspection, adjustment and calibration of multi-valve regulators for variable-geometry turbocompressors so that we can keep pace with the technological advances in this field (see photos).

We have added the calibration and adjustment of multi-valve regulators to our current procedure and it seems that we are pioneers in this area, if not the first independent refurbisher to propose this service on the French market.
